Cosmetic Labelling Requirements in India
A visual guide to mandatory cosmetic labelling elements required for import and sale in India under the Cosmetics Rules, 2020.
Cosmetic labelling in India is governed under the Cosmetics Rules, 2020. Product labels must clearly communicate identity, composition, manufacturing details, safety information, and importer details to ensure consumer protection and regulatory compliance.
A label that is fully compliant in another jurisdiction may still require modification for the Indian market. Common mandatory elements include:
- Product name and brand
- Category (e.g., cream, lotion, shampoo)
- Manufacturer name & address (with country of origin)
- Importer name & address (for imported cosmetics)
- Batch / lot number
- Manufacturing date
- Use-by / expiry date
- Net contents
- List of ingredients (INCI nomenclature)
- Directions for use and any precautions
- Mandatory declarations under the applicable rules
At Cosmaloft, we help cosmetic brands review existing labels, design compliant artwork, and avoid common pitfalls that can lead to import detention or regulatory observations.
